In France, in 1801, Joseph Jacquard perfected a device which when adapted to the carpet loom revolutionized the weaving industry. It was a pattern-selecting series of punched cards, which when laced together and fed into the loom, produced the pattern. It was not the work of one man, but Jacquard perfected it. It was introduced at Tiverton in 1812, and by 1825, it had been introduced into Kidderminster by Messrs. Lea, Broome & Son. The effect was to speed up the manufacture and reduce the costs of weaving.
